Unravelling and
reweaving the ages
In the Nishigamo area of Kyoto, SAITO ORIMONO uses handlooms to produce the Nishijin-ori fabric obi belts sold at GION SAITO. We study the antique kogire fabric patterns that we have collected over many years, including noh costumes and old jidaigire fabric pieces, and recreate them as obi belts.
We produce fabrics from karaori-weave, known for their full-bodied weft, to modern stylish fabrics, as well as a wide array of Japanese clothing accessories using these handwoven fabrics.
As for our products created by the hands of artisans who have mastered the various skills and techniques that have come into existence throughout history, we are proud to call each and every item a one-of-a-kind work interwoven with the culture and historical background of the past, and even indications of the changing of times.
Based on antique kogire fabrics infused with a breathtaking beauty, this is a new form of Nishijin-ori fabric that interweaves the highly refined aesthetic sense of yore together with a modern sensibility.
Our goal is to create woven fabrics that resonate deep within your heart
Based on the theme of a new, creative style of production that learns from classic beauty but is not boxed in by old Nishijin standards, we continue to engage in daily study and revitalizing our techniques.
CREATION
The beauty and
technique imbued
in antique kogire fabrics
The examples of ancient dyed and woven fabrics remaining today were born from the mastery of materials and technique that were the pinnacle of their day, and symbolized wealth and power in those times.
These patterns and valuable items from several hundred years ago are reborn as obi belts, woven into a new shape right before our eyes, with high fidelity to their origins. We do more than simply learn the sensibilities of the ages in which wonderful objects were crafted and recreate them as-is. We create completely new objects that are interwoven with the sensibilities we have as people living in modern times.
Bustling with the busy and cheerful sounds of looms hard at work, the production floor is a string of daily discovery and amazement.
